Important Rule Changes – Royal Winter Fair Qualification

As per the Royal Winter Fairs request, the WPCAO has introduced a qualifying process for the Under Saddle classes at the Royal Winter Fair. Rules and point system for Ontario competitors is as follows:

  1. Owner must be a fully paid up member of the Welsh Pony & Cob Association of Ontario of the current year. (Not applicable to out of province competitors)
  2. The pony/cob/horse must have entered and exhibited in a under saddle class (qualifying classes: Section A/B Under Saddle Junior to Ride, Section A/B Under Saddle Adult to ride, Section C/D Adult or Junior to Ride and Half Welsh Under Saddle Adult or Junior to ride) at a minimum of three (3) Ontario High Point Welsh show of the current year.
  3. A point system of ranking will be implemented:

The WPCAO will keep track of all points throughout 2017 for each pony/cob/horse. Points will be accumulated for all animals exhibiting in the following under saddle classes:

– Section A/B Under Saddle Junior to ride

– Section A/B Under Saddle Adult to ride

– Section C/D Under Saddle Adult or Junior to ride

– Half Welsh Under Saddle Adult or Junior to ride

Only placings at Ontario High Point shows that are held prior to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair entry deadline for the current year will count.

These shows are:

Caledon Fair

Welsh Summer Classic

All Welsh
Sutton Fair

Arthur Fair

Brampton Fair

Lindsay Exhibition

Great Northern Exhibition

Only the pony/cob’s best 5 shows will be tabulated.

Points will be awarded based on placings:

  • 30 points for 1st place
  • 25 points for 2nd place
  • 20 points for 3rd place
  • 15 points for 4th place
  • 10 points for 5th place
  • 5 points for all other exhibitors in the class.

From the pony/cob/horses’ best 5 shows, the points will be totaled and ranked. Points will NOT be awarded based on how many animals bested.

Please note that this point system is NOT the same as the Ontario High Point System. The Ontario High Point System will run as normal; it will include all Ontario High Point Shows, only count your top 5 shows and will include points for ponies bested.

From the ranked list, the top 5 ponies from Section A/B Under Saddle Junior to ride and the top 5 ponies from Section A/B Under Saddle Adult to ride will automatically qualify to enter the Section A/B Under Saddle class at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.

The top 10 cobs from Section C/D will automatically qualify for the Section C/D Under Saddle class at the Royal Agricultural winter fair and the top 10 ponies/horses from Half Welsh will automatically qualify for the Half Welsh Under Saddle Class at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.

All qualified entries will be notified by WPCAO that they have been accepted.

For each of the three under saddle classes (Section A/B, Section C/D and Half Welsh), two (2) wild card spots will be held for Non Ontario exhibitors, for a total of 6 spots held for Non Ontario exhibitors in total.

For any spots not filled by Non Ontario exhibitors, the spot will be filled with a qualified Ontario exhibitor. These spots will be filled based on the next highest ranking exhibitor on the ranked list. Exhibitors will be contacted that they have been accepted due to an open spot by the WPCAO.

The WPCAO will keep an up to date ranking list that will be accessible through their social media pages and website so that exhibitors will be aware of their ranking throughout the year.

Due to the short window between the Royal deadline and the last qualifying show, all exhibitors should send in their Under Saddle entries by the Royal Agricultural Winter entry deadline, even if they are unsure if they have qualified or not. This is to ensure that all entries have been sent in time, and make sure that if a spot has been opened up, that next qualifying exhibitor’s entry is at the show office. The RAWF will refund any exhibitors that are not accepted. A pony/cob/horse that is leased from outside of Canada/Ontario but is shown in Ontario Shows, the pony/cob/horse would be qualified the same way as Ontario ponies/cobs/horses would in their respected classes.
